What Risks Are Associated with Dental Implants?

Dental implants have proven to be an effective tooth replacement option for damaged and missing teeth. It is a safe and quick procedure that uses appropriate dental implant materials to place an artificial tooth, allowing you to chew and smile normally.

At Alexandra Garcia, DDS, MS, our doctor Dr. Garcia will guide you through the entire process of implant placement, dental implant cost, and aftercare to ensure good oral health. However, you must be aware of certain risks associated with dental implants before the procedure.

Sinus Damage

Since the upper jaw is located under the nasal sinuses, there is a risk of damaging the sinus. This can cause infection or discomfort. Other potential symptoms might include:
•  Swelling, tenderness, or pain around the forehead, eyes, or cheeks
•  Yellow or green nasal mucus
•  Blocked nose
•  Bad breath
•  Toothache
•  Fever

Infection

There is always a risk of infection in every surgical procedure. It is essential to follow all of the aftercare instructions and recommendations the dental team gives to reduce the chances of an infection. Be sure to immediately contact your dentist in case of fluid drainage, swelling, or pain on the incision site.

Nerve or Tissue Damage

A slight chance of nerve or tissue damage is also possible when the implants are being implanted in the jaw. This results in tingling, numbness or discomfort in your chin, gums, teeth, or lips. An experienced dentist will take x-rays of your jaw before the surgery to identify the locations of the nerves to avoid this problem.

A tissue or nerve issue needs immediate medical attention as it could also lead to Inferior alveolar nerve injury that could cause:
•  Persistent numbness
•  Consistent discomfort or pain
•  Burning sensation, tickling, or tingling in the skin and gums

Osseointegration Failure

After the implants are placed, the osseointegration process starts, in which the bone gradually spreads around the implant and secures it in place. If this process fails, the implant will fall off or need to be removed. This process is called dental implant failure and requires an implant replacement or another solution.

Improper Dental Implant Placement

In some cases, an error might occur in the placement of the implant. Even the slightest misplacement or incorrect angle could result in complications. The implant won’t properly adjust to the bone or could be too close to the other teeth, causing pain or discomfort.

Gum Recession

In some instances, the gum tissue surrounding the dental implant starts to recede, resulting in pain and inflammation. Getting it checked immediately by a dentist is essential to prevent further complications.

Damage to Other Teeth

A dental implant might also impact the teeth surrounding the implant, particularly if there is root damage or decay problems. The implant placement could make these issues worse.

Before undergoing a dental implant procedure, it is essential to consult your dentist regarding the process and the associated risks. Make sure you inform the dentist about any existing health problems and medications you are taking to determine whether or not implants are the right option for you.
