New Dentures May Be Uncomfortable But We Can Help Ease the Pain with These Tips
Posted on 8/9/2021 by Alexandra Garcia DDS MS
New dentures can be uncomfortable at first. They require some getting used to, especially when it comes to eating and speaking while wearing them. It can take up to a month for you to adjust to wearing dentures, but until then, follow these tips for managing denture-related discomfort.
Wear Your Dentures As Much As Possible
It may seem counterintuitive to suggest wearing your dentures as much as possible if they are uncomfortable, but the reality is that your mouth simply needs to get used to this new oral appliance. Wearing your dentures all day will not only allow you to gradually become more comfortable eating, speaking, and smiling with your new dentures, but it also helps stabilize your jaw and facial structure. Plus, if you are frequently taking your dentures out and putting them back in without properly cleaning them, you risk introducing germs and bacteria into your mouth that could cause an infection.
Remove Your Dentures at Night for Cleaning
While we recommend wearing your dentures as much as possible during the day, you should always remove your dentures at night and clean them thoroughly before you go to bed. Food debris, plaque, and bacteria accumulate on your dentures throughout the day, so leaving them in at night can contribute to oral infections and pain. After removing your dentures, thoroughly clean them with a specialized denture cleanser and soak them in water overnight. You should also brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth with toothpaste, not denture cleanser.
Rinse with Warm Salt Water
Sores are common among first-time denture patients. After all, your dentures sit against your gums all day. If you develop gum sores, rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help ease the irritation. If your sores persist after a month or your dentures feel like they are constantly rubbing against your gums or slipping around, you may need to have your dentures adjusted or relined.
