Congratulations on getting your dental implants! We are pretty sure that your smile looks like a million bucks. No wonder you have a pep in your step. So, when we say that we don't want to burst your bubble of happiness, we mean it. All we want is to make sure that you are taking good care of your dental implants after the procedure.
At Alexandra Garcia, DDS, MS, Dr. Garcia and Dr. Alexandra Garcia have handled plenty of cases where patients complain about having pain in the gum surrounding their dental implants. One of the biggest reasons this happens is when you start slacking in your oral hygiene routine. From brushing to flossing, using mouth wash, and taking it easy on your teeth, you need to do everything. Let's take a look at some of the dos don'ts after having your dental implant surgery:
Dos
•
Do Let Your Gums Heal: There's going to be a little pain inflammation at the sight of your dental implants. So, avoid drinking cold water or chewing gum for a few weeks.
•
Eat Soft Foods: While crunchy veggies and fruits are great for your teeth, they can be a little stressful on your dental implants right after surgery. So, include soft foods in your diet, such as fruit smoothies, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.
•
Do Use Ice to Reduce Selling: Wrap a few cubes if ice in a cloth and place them on your jaw for relief. Do this at least a dozen times a day for 30 minutes.
Don'ts
•
Don't Chew Tobacco or Smoke: Both these can cause an infection to develop in your gums. When the bacteria travels down and reaches the implant, it can spread and cause tooth decay.
•
Don’t Brush Vigorously: Replace your toothbrush with a soft nylon brush. The soft bristles will be gentle on your implant and gums and prevent bleeding. Make sure to still keep the pressure light.
•
Don’t Drink Alcohol for At Least 24 Hours: As we said, give your dental implants time to heal and settle in. The alcohol might interfere with your pain medication and cause problems.
Follow these dos and don'ts religiously, and your dental implants won't cause any irritation or pain. If you experience any problems, visit Alexandra Garcia, DDS, MS immediately. To schedule an appointment, call at (346) 250-2930.
