Prosthodontics as a branch of dentistry, mainly deals with making dental prosthetics (artificial teeth) for damaged or missing teeth. It focuses on a wide array of oral issues. When it comes to the replacement of one or several teeth, handling dental and facial problems, they are the recognized experts. Now, prosthodontics is a broad specialty with four branches explained below.
Fixed Prosthodontics
Fixed prosthodontics focuses on dental prostheses which are permanent. That means, once the prosthetic is fixed, it cannot be removed. When it comes to the restoration of teeth using bridges, crowns (caps), veneers (covers for the tooth surface), inlays (modified crowns), and onlays (modified inlays), all are covered in the branch.
Removable Prosthodontics
Just as the name suggests, this is a sub-specialty that mainly works with producing removable dental prostheses. An example of such is dentures, either complete or partial, gingival dentures that are surface covers for the base of the tooth that hide discoloration. If you want a removable bridge or a set of dentures, a check-up on your gums or a tissue injury, or receding gums with discoloration, all that falls under this branch of prosthodontics.
Implant Prosthodontics
A dental implant is a word that you might come across when learning about oral health. In prosthodontics, it's a process of adding small titanium cylinders to protect fixed prostheses inside the mouth. Other implant prostheses include larger bridges, individual crowns, and fixed or removable implant dentures.
Maxillofacial Prosthodontics
This is a sub-set of prosthodontics that is mainly focused on facial operations. These operations are, correcting malformed tissues and replace missing tissues and structures. In severe cases, it causes disfigurement. Issues relating to palates and the jaw fall under this branch. For more information about your oral health call us now.
