Whether you want to close gaps in your teeth, straighten crooked teeth, or reduce crowding, the overall goal of Invisalign clear aligners and braces is the same – aligning your bite. Straighter teeth help you maintain your oral health, improve the look of your bite, and feel more confident. Invisalign and braces work by applying pressure to your teeth to gently move them.
Braces vs Invisalign
Traditional braces use brackets that are fixed to the teeth with a wire joining them. On the other hand, Invisalign involves a series of clear plastic aligners that fit over the teeth. Invisalign aligners are difficult to see because they are clear. That is why they are referred to as invisible braces. Since you can remove them, it is easier to clean your mouth during your treatment. Some people, however, find it inconvenient to wear aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day. Also, you are now allowed to drink or eat anything except water while wearing your aligners.
And because not everyone is a candidate for Invisalign, you may need to wear traditional braces instead of the aligners. Although Invisalign can treat about 90 percent of the cases, when it comes to severe malocclusion, you will need fixed braces or maybe surgery.
There are different types of braces including clear ceramic braces, lingual braces, and self-ligating braces. The effectiveness of Invisalign and braces may vary depending on individual situations. However, a majority of patients are treated just as effectively with metal braces as with Invisalign. However, in about 10 percent of cases, fixed braces tend to be a better option.
